About the project

With its new, comprehensive market data service, the ZIV wants to provide targeted support for the German bicycle industry and retailers. The data offers an invaluable basis for business planning, particularly in times of economic uncertainty. The service is being developed in close collaboration with the Bicycle Association of Great Britain, which is contributing its many years of experience in data service provision. As a non-profit oriented service, it will be made available to subscribers on a cost-covering basis.
A win-win situation for all involved
Meaningful data will be obtained from the participating retailers, who will upload anonymised sales data directly from their merchandise management systems. The interface can be set up quickly and easily and is entirely free to use. The data will be aggregated, processed and made available via a customisable data dashboard. The benefits are manifold – for retail, industry and the association:

  • Retail – Retailers, who contribute anonymous sales data, are able to can access the dashboard for free and to compare their own data with the data for the market as a whole.
  • Industry – ZIV member companies can access the anonymised, aggregated data in the desired level of detail based on a cost-covering, tiered subscription model.
  • Association – The new service strengthens the ZIV by making a continuously growing, up-to-date and comprehensive wealth of data available – data that is required to effectively represent the industry’s interests and gain in-depth market insights.
BA as development partner
The service is being developed in close collaboration with the Bicycle Association (BA) of Great Britain, which has been building up and developing its successful market data service for many years now. The BA’s Market Data Service provides the only accurate, up-to-date and usable retail analysis of the UK bicycle market and is unique internationally. It polls sales monthly from 70% of the market – from the largest chains to small specialist stores, including bricks-and-mortar and online businesses.
Project funding from EIT Urban Mobility
The development of the ZIV market data service is supported by EIT Urban Mobility as part of their work to promote a competitive and sustainable European bicycle industry. EIT Urban Mobility is an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.
Platform launch in 2026
The ZIV’s new market data service is currently being set up and the platform will go live in 2026. The concept for the market data service and its continuous development aligns closely with users’ needs and feedback.
